September 2004 News Ronan: Yusuf Islam is the 'gentlest' man he knows
Ronan defends 'gentle' friend Cat - By Becky Howard, This is London - September 28th 2004 This is London
Pop star Ronan Keating has spoken out in defence of his friend Cat Stevens – branding his deportation from the US last week 'horrendous'.
The Irish solo singer has re-recorded Stevens' classic hit Father and Son with the former 70's star, who is now known as Yusuf Islam after converting to the religion. Stevens was refused entry to the US last week after his name was mistakenly put on a terrorist 'watch list' – and former Boyzone star Ronan can't believe the treatment he received.
"It's aboslutely horrendous. He's the most peaceful, gentle man in the world. They got it wrong, I think they know that, but I don't think he's been told yet," he says.
"We were talking on the phone yesterday about it. I mean, he can't believe it, in fact, he was laughing about it. I suppose it's the only way to look at it. Because he is the gentlest man I've ever met."
Ronan, who has remained good friends with Yusuf Islam since Boyzone covered Father and Son in 1995, refused to confirm whether the collaboration will be released yet as a single – and only says he "doesn't know" anything yet.
And the chance of such a single reaching the Christmas Number One spot? "Let's not even go there! That's dangerous territory..." he laughs. Back to top

ENTERTAINMENT EMAIL: I'LL MAYBE GET DRUNK WITH THE BOYZ BUT I'M BETTER ON MY OWN
Ronan rules out reunion
HE'S celebrating 10 years at the top with a greatest hits tour and album - but Ronan Keating isn't looking back.
He can't wait to bring his show to Glasgow in December and has stamped on rumours of a Boyzone reunion tour.
Ronan, 27, said: 'It's just not right for me. I'm not ready for it, not comfortable with it. I don't want to go back to that - it was too mad.
'I'm very happy where I am. I think the lads understand that now. The relationships are a little bit better, we're talking again.
'We've hooked up, had dinner, got drunk and it's been easier - but it wasn't that easy.
'I was part of a mad rollercoaster - six years in the band - and that consumes you. I just wanted to get away from it all.
'What I'm doing now is far more natural. I feel at ease. I'm lucky I'm doing this and that people are interested in my songs.'
While Ronan's excited about his guaranteed sell-out gigs at the SECC, the famed Scottish crowd isn't the only reason he's so keen to come here.
He said: 'I love Glasgow - I have great memories of Christmas shopping there and it's going to be the same again.
'It'll be the middle of December so I can get all the presents for my wife and the kids.
'I've always said Glasgow is the best UK show - the fans are just mad.
'They have a lot of energy and are very enthusiastic. They're very loyal, too. ' Although you might think Ronan's young family - he and wife Yvonne, 30, have two children, Jack, five, and three-year-old Marie - would put him off touring, he loves it and simply brings his clan with him.
He said: 'Touring's probably the best craic you can have. You do nothing all day then go on stage for two hours - it's great.
'Being on stage is the most rewarding thing for me. The fans love it and watching them sing your songs back at you is electrifying.
'The family get to come on the road most of the time. Jack's started school now so it's a little more difficult but they travel when they can and I go over at weekends and stuff.'
Controversy The album which corresponds with the tour has caused controversy as Ronan covers three Boyzone hits.
He said: 'The Boyzone tracks were something I felt I should do. I owed it to the fans.
'I was doing an album of 10 years of my songs and the first six years were just as important. I picked songs that were important to me, that I put my stamp on.
'Also, they weren't Boyzone originals - there's a Cat Stevens, a Tracy Chapman and a Bee Gees.
'I've done them very differently now, they're acoustic.' Back to top

Ronan Keating is planning a huge tour of Ireland later this year.
Speaking exclusively to Radar yesterday, the singer said he plans to do a series of live gigs across Ireland: "I'm planning a bigger tour than I have done for a while in Ireland. I want to play more places than just Belfast and Dublin.
"So at the minute we're looking at the possibility of doing a few dates in different parts of the country...
....yesterday he signed autographs for hundreds of eager fans at Golden Discs in the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre - his first Irish signing in five years.

Showbiz Ireland - September 24th 2004
Ronan Keating is what you might call a singer and a gentleman - ShowBiz Ireland followed the Dubliner to a number of charity events this week and found his company a delight...
Ronan Keating may have his detractors when it comes to his music but no one can complain about his character - the guy is a charity driven family man and an absolute charming fellow to be around. And come to think of it, he's one of the few singers around today that will still have a career in ten years time!
This week ShowBiz Ireland caught up with Ro for 18 holes at Druid's Heath golf course, Marriott Hotel, Co. Wicklow where he was playing in the Ronnie Whelan Golf Classic for charity.
And even though he lost his ball a few times and had his swing to concentrate on, he wasn't even in the slightest bit bothered about the presence of our photographer.
In fact the 27 year old was professional, fun and courteous at all times and even looked the part decked-out in the latest golf fashions. Could this be a new look for Mr. Keating?
ShowBiz Ireland also followed Ronan along to another charity event this week, which is very close to his heart, at the launch of the Pink Ribbon Day for the Marie Keating Foundation.
As most of you all may know Ronan's late mother Marie past away due to cancer and ever since he, his wife Yvonne and his family have put monumental work into raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.
In fact Ronan's efforts, through Marie Keating Mobile Cancer Information Units, has educated over 40,000 women throughout Ireland about the illness, and as a result over 2,000 of them were referred to their GPs for evaluation.
And Ronan's not stopping there - the talented singer's next single I hope You Dance, which is released to day, will hopefully raise bundles of cash for the charity.
So ShowBiz Ireland would like to remind all of our readers to get out there and buy the single and get it to No. 1.
Whether you like Ronan's music or not you have to respect what he's trying to achieve...

Meet Ronan Keating This Weekend In Golden Discs Liffey Valley!
This weekend Ronan Keating will be appearing in Golden Discs store, Liffey Valley shopping centre at 4.30pm to sign copies of his new single, ’I Hope You Dance’.
Ronan Keating's new single is expected to raise more than just the hopes of another No. 1 hit for the talented Dubliner. "I Hope You Dance" is also expected to raise wads of dosh for Breast cancer Awareness.
Recorded as part of a major UK Breast Cancer Care programme known as Tickled Pink Campaign, the single prompted Golden Discs to donate all profits to The Marie Keating Foundation. Ronan was over the moon to hear that the nation's only independent retail chain has gone the distance on this, providing much needed funds for the Irish organisation which provides free information and awareness on the subject.
On Thursday morning 23rd, Ronan and his wife Yvonne will join a number of stars including Kerry McFadden to launch Marie Keating Foundations’ Pink Ribbon Campaign.
Released September 24th, "I Hope You Dance" is a positive song. Country pop at its very best, the song was originally a major hit for Lee Ann Womack in 2000. Ronan jumped at the opportunity to record the song for Tickled Pink and last night performed the single in the Albert Hall along with a host of other stars including Geri Halliwell, Natasha Bedingfield, Tom Jones, Jules Holland, Beverly Night and Lisa Standsfield. At 27 Ronan has enjoyed worldwide chart success for a decade. He has sold in excess of 17 million albums. He has duetted with everyone from Elton John to Pavarotti. But nothing gives him greater personal satisfaction than to put his talents to a worthy cause.
”I Hope You Dance” is released on Universal 24th September and will be featured on his forthcoming 10 years of Hits album in October.

Ireland on Sunday newspaper The Diary With Gavin + White - September 19th 2004 No wonder Ronan Keating was beaming. He was surrounded by the likes of Miss Ireland finalist Claudine Palmer and model Katy French and Lizanna Kirwan at Dublin's Radisson Hotel. And they were not the only racy models on show when the new 1 Series Beemer took its bow on Wednesday night. Ronan, who clearly appreciates sleek lines and plush trim, told The Diary he was about to embark on a busy week. He chatted about his Thursday-night appearance with US chart-topper Leann Rimes, his British TV appearance on Saturday and his duet with George Michael at London's Royal Albert Hall today. Unfortunately for the busy Keating, the one date he couldn't keep was Friday night's Boyzone reunion. The Irish singer was expected to attend the Keith Duffy Golf Classic but while the rest of the band were enjoying the night, Ronan was in Britain fast asleep. He told the Diary that he would love to have gone but that with the release of his single, I Hope You Dance, at the end of this month, he just had to be in London. 'I was supposed to go to Keith's charity ball but I have to be in England to do CD:UK on Saturday morning, and then, on Sunday night, I am singing with George Michael in the Royal Albert Hall in London so we will have to rehear$e for that. The show is for a cancer charity and it is with 15 other artists so I know I won't be up for anything if I go mad in Dublin. 'Tomorrow, I am going to make an appearance on stage at one of Leann's British concerts, to perform our recent duet. The song went Top 10 in the US so I have no problem doing a guest spot." Friends of Keating also explained how the singer recently had to change his mobile-phone number after getting scary phone calls from a stranger. A pal said: "He was going to contact the Gardaí but settled for changing his number." Thanks to Regina! Back to top

MOVIE BONANZA
This is Cornwall - September 16th 2004
A Hollywood actor and a British actor with a hardman reputation are among the stars of three new films to be shot in Cornwall.
Production on the films starring Eddie Griffin, Vinnie Jones and Ronan Keating is set to begin at South West Film Studios at St Agnes this autumn
Five hundred extras will be needed for the pictures which have combined production budgets of more than £15 million.
It is hoped that more and more jobs for locally qualified film crews and other professionals will be created by the influx of films.
Guns, Money and Home Cooking is a comedy thriller which stars Vinnie Jones and Ronan Keating who is making his film debut. The film, with a production budget of £5.5 million, will be using the studios and locations around Porthleven, and is already in pre-production.
Alex Swan, managing director of the film studios, has been cautious about making any announcements of confirmed film productions until they are under way, but is now confident that the studios are on a roll, with many more films lining up to use the studios.
He said: "It's been a tough time in the film industry. Changes in Government regulations on tax breaks put back a lot of films which had to renegotiate finances. But we're on our way now."
The £6 million studios are based on a 10-acre site in St Agnes and currently offer two sound stage studios together with a suite of offices for the pre-production work to take place prior to filming, post production facilities, catering and other on site services.
Guns, Money and Home Cooking is already in pre-production at the studios and will be until filming starts at the end of October with a scheduled completion date in early December.
Filming is to take place at the studios and around Cornwall, although locations are still being finalised. Five hundred extras will be needed.
The £5.5 million production is due for release in the summer of 2005. Film producer Phillip Emanuel said: "The story is set in Cornwall and I believe it is vital to film in authentic locations - so it makes perfect sense to do our studio work close by; we can do the least travelling possible while we are shooting, with the option of studio work if the weather is bad."
Details of how people can apply for jobs in films being shot at the studios, for example as extras, will be made available shortly. Back to top

Ronan Keating
Irish crooner Ronan Keating has been topping the charts for the past decade with Boyzone and as a solo artist. Next month, he releases a greatest hits album following his latest single, a cover version of the country hit, ‘I hope you dance’, in aid of Breast Cancer Care. The cause has been close to his heart since his mother died of the disease in 1998 and he set up the Marie Keating Foundation in her name. Ronan, 27, has made a full recovery after collapsing from over working, he lives with his wife, former model Yvonne and their two children Jack, five and three-year-old Marie in Dublin. I usually fly home on Friday from wherever I’ve been working but I’m trying not to do that as much since I contracted a virus and collapsed. “A good Friday night for me is going to the cinema in Dublin and we go as a family. “On Saturday mornings, I like a lay-in. I usually get up at 10.00 after the kids have come in and jumped on my head. They watch Nickelodeon Junior while Yvonne and I have a cup of tea and decide what to do for the day. We like to go into the city and do a bit of shopping. There’s a great sushi restaurant in Brown Thomas – Dublin’s equivalent to Harvey Nichols – that the kids love as well. They’re not over keen on raw fish, but they like teriyaki chicken. “Sometimes I cook for everyone when we get home. Otherwise, we love to eat at ‘Shanahan’s in town, which is a French-style steak house. Locally there’s a great Thai restaurant, Siam, and a Chinese called ‘Silks’. “Occasionally we go clubbing, either to Renards or Lillies Bordello and we can get back at 5 or 6 in the morning, which isn’t easy when you have kids. I always go for a run early Sunday morning to sort my head out. “If it’s someone’s birthday, we have a chef in to cook, it doesn’t work out much more expensive than going to a fancy restaurant. “On Sunday evening, I like to finish the weekend with another movie. If the boys pick, it’s always an action film, and if the girls choose it’s likely to be something like ‘Cold Mountain’.

Ronan was over the moon to hear that the nation's only independent retail chain has gone the distance on this, providing much needed funds for the Irish organisation which provides free information and awareness on the subject.
"When we heard about the UK Tickled Pink campaign we wanted to do something in Ireland" said Golden Discs' General Manager Eamon Keogh. "The Marie Keating Foundation has helped so many women over the last few years, we really wanted to help, and what better than donating all the profits from the sale of Ronan's single in Golden Discs shops to such a worthy cause."
Released on September 24th, "I Hope You Dance" is a positive song. Country pop at its very best, the song was originally a major hit for Lee Ann Womack in 2000. "Ronan and his family know only too well the devastation that can be caused by breast cancer," said his spokeswoman. "His mum died from this terrible disease in 1998 and Ronan has been promoting awareness ever since.
At 27 Ronan has enjoyed worldwide chart success for a decade. He has sold in excess of 17 million albums. He has duetted with everyone from Elton John to Pavarotti. But nothing gives him greater personal satisfaction than to put his talents to a worthy cause.
Said a spokesperson for the Marie Keating Foundation: "We're thrilled with Golden Discs. Fundraising has so far enabled us to visit 1,474 towns and reach 40,048 people. As a result 2,197 women have been referred to their GP for further evaluation. The timing of the release of song is also fantastic as October is Breast Cancer Awarenss Month. With tracks such as "Life is a Rollercoaster" and "When you say nothing at all", Ronan Keating attracts a large and enthusiastic fan base while himself remaining wonderfully normal. 27-year-old Keating fills concert venues by simple virtue of his natural manner and charm. In a business full of attention-seekers, Ronan enjoys a reputation untainted by scandal or tastelessness. In typical Ronan Keating style, his latest tour program is called "Turn it on". The title refers to one of the tracks on his "Greatest Hits" album – a brand new release this autumn. Princess Anne and Ronan Keating join forces in Ireland
Hello Magazine - September 10th 2004
A common cause – the protection of children – brought together a member of the British royal family and one of Ireland's music heart-throbs in Dublin this week, when Princess Anne mingled with singer Ronan Keating at a charity ball.
The Princess Royal was a guest of honour at the Irish Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Children (ISPCC) gala, held at the Berkley Court Hotel. It was there the Queen's only daughter met up with then former Boyzone vocalist, to help raise thousands of pounds for needy youngsters across the country.
Princess Anne's evening out was just one event on her agenda during a two-day visit to Ireland. She is set to travel Limerick – where she'll meet with the city's mayor and visit the local university – before returning to Dublin to tour an equestrian centre and a local hospital. Back to top
Princess Attends Dublin Charity Ball
The Scotsman - September 9th 2004
By Ed Carty, PA News
The Princess Royal was guest of honour at a crown ball to raise thousands of pounds for needy children across Ireland tonight.
Anne joined celebrities from the world of entertainment and sport at the gala event in a top Dublin hotel.
Ronan Keating said it meant a great deal to have the Princess Royal as guest of honour.
"We're all here for the ISPCC and to raise as much money as possible for the children," Keating said.
"It's a great honour that Princess Anne is here tonight. It's a great honour for the country and for the charity and it's going to be a great night."
The Princess Royal, who has worked to raise funds for more than 200 charities through the years, was presented with a posy of flowers on her arrival by Kirsten, daughter of hosts Gerald and Clodagh Kean.
Mr Kean said almost £100,000 had been raised through the event for the ISPCC. It is believed, however, that with donations on the night, more than double that amount will be raised.
Other guests at the ball included former England captain Alan Shearer, and Ireland's outgoing finance minister Charlie McCreevy also attended with his wife Noleen.
