East Anglian Daily Times launches £100,000 cancer charity bid

By HoldtheFrontPage staff - May 31st 2005

East Anglian Daily Times - Hold The Front Page

The East Anglian Daily Times has launched a campaign to raise £100,000 for breast cancer charity Breakthrough.

The Archant-owned newspaper's Ray of Hope appeal was kick-started with a champagne launch of a book by EADT columnist Rhona Damant.

Sit Down and Stop Laughing is a compilation of the 44-year-old mother-of-two's weekly diaries for the EADT, which chronicle her experience of terminal illness.

The writer was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 38 and although initial treatment appeared to be successful, it has now spread through her body.

All the profits from the sale of the book, which has a foreword written by Irish pop star Ronan Keating, who lost his own mother to breast cancer, will go to the EADT's campaign.

Readers inspired by her story and Breakthrough's Suffolk branch are also arranging and taking part in events to raise the £100,000 for the charity and help in its search for a cure.  Sit Down and Stop Laughing can be purchased from Outrageous Fortune Design

RONAN PROVES A WINNING FAVOURITE AT NEWMARKET - Racing Post May 24th 2005

By LEE MOTTERSHEAD

HE BOASTS an impressive Irish pedigree, a top-class record at thehighest level, perfect conformation and dashing good looks, writes Lee Mottershead. He patently possesses the qualities to make him an obvious headline attraction for Newmarket's racing-mad residents. No wonder then that, despite having only half the number of legs possessed by most star draws at Headquarters, Ronan Keating has broken all box-office records.

There may be two months to pass before the Irish swoonercrooner's appearance at Newmarket's July 15 evening meeting, but the "full house" signs have already gone up. Once Boyzone's frontman and now the voice behind Life Is A Rollercoaster and If Tomorrow Never Comes, Keating has sold out one of the annual Newmarket Nights concerts faster than any artist before him.

"Ronan Keating has taken the box office by storm," said Newmarket's marketing manager, Gaynor Haxby, yesterday.

"Ronan has a broad appeal to people across all ages and, of course, he naturally appeals to women for obvious reasons. He's very attractive, he has a lovely Irish accent and, of course, his music has singalong qualities, which is a big factor at Newmarket Nights."

Brian McFadden talking about Ronan with Steve Wright from BBC Radio 2 - May 24th

Please do not use this transcript anywhere else without asking for permission!

Steve Wright:
Personal love or personal feelings aside when you look at Ronan or someone like Ronan is he an inspiration to you as someone who's now gone solo from a boy band?

Brian: Ronan has always been an inspiration from the first day I met him, ya know? the guy sings from a very normal background and ya know we're from I think Ronan is an amazing talent but people wouldn't say he's not Michael Jackson or someone like that and yet he does so much ground work and hard work, working around the country and working so hard to make his success ya know as you get to know him his real talent starts to show and he's someone that we're very proud of in Ireland and I'm personally very proud of him and I think he's a true professional and someone that I really admire.

Steve: And he has something that you have, a wonderfully controlled beautiful voice and it's important to have that isn't it?

Brian: I think when you think about Irish singers there's no big soul singers there's nothing, but I think what Irish singers have like Westlife, myself and Ronan even Bono; it's more about just singing from the heart it's not about trying to show off with your voice it's more about when you're singing it comes from the heart.

Ronan takes a break for a shining ‘little star’ - Belfast Telegraph – Friday May 20th 2005

Top Irish celebrity Ronan Keating made an eight-year-old Belfast girl feel like a ‘little star’ when he took time out from his marathon walk to spend time with her this week.

Laura Sloane, from the west of the city, suffers from bone cancer and has spent the last 15 months off school.  Recently, she travelled to Birmingham for surgery where she had some bone from her leg transferred to her arm.  But the brave little girl managed a big smile this week when she met her pop idol Ronan Keating.

The Dublin singer, who’s undertaking a walk of Ireland to raise money for cancer awareness met up with Laura at the Europa Hotel in Belfast.  He spent time chatting to her and her mum and, afterwards, praised her as a “brave little girl”

Jean Walsh of Cancer Research said, “Laura came to our attention through our Little Star programme when she was ill in hospital and we thought it would be lovely for her to meet Ronan.  “He was lovely with her and she seemed delighted to meet him.”

This Saturday on Channel 4's T4, a new version of the click film will be shown for the very first time.

Since the original was shown on TV just a few weeks ago it has helped to spread the word far and wide about the massive opportunity that 2005 represents to stop poverty claiming a child's life every 3 seconds.

Many famous faces saw the film and wanted to lend their support to what the Make Poverty History campaign is doing. That's why Channel 4 made their own version of the film - and it will be shown over the next 52 days in the run up to the all important G8 conference on July 6th.

But there is another, much more important version being made too - the People's Click Film - and we need you, the driving force of the campaign, to be in it.

If you, or anyone you know, would like to be one of the 25 people involved, then please go to the T4 website and put your name forward. All you will have to do is click your fingers in front of their cameras http://www.makepovertyhistory.org/

In the meantime - don't forget to watch the Channel 4 click film this Saturday and thanks for your vital support.

Thanks to Heather!

Ronan supports Bike Safe 2000 – The Northwest 200 Bike Festival Northern Ireland

Interview with Ulster TV news - May 2005

Welcome to the Northwest 200, thousands are converging here for this first night, practice night and then everything is building to race day obviously on Saturday.  Now safety is an important issue with all the riders up here, not just for the riders but indeed for all the spectators.  And today the PSNI launched their Bike Safe Campaign along with the help of a bike mad celebrity.

Irish singing sensation Ronan Keating is currently walking the length of Ireland to raise money for cancer in memory of his mother, but the keen biker was only too happy to don a helmet and throw his weight behind this year’s Bike Safe Campaign.

R:  I like me bikes a lot and I try and be as careful as possible it’s very important that you pay attention to other drivers and drivers pay attention to motorcyclists too.  And it’s something ya know, I’m a motorcyclist myself and I give out about drivers but I’m a driver and I give out about motorcyclists, it’s a two way coin you have to be careful both ways but it is very important that drivers also pay attention to motorcyclists and over the next few weeks when all the bikes are zooming up and down in the next few days, the drivers pay attention to the bikes and likewise ya know?.

Well I know you’ll be busy, you won’t be able to make it to the Northwest this year but is it an event you would like to attend?

R:  I would love to go along to the Northwest 200 it would be fantastic, I’m walking for the next 3 weeks there’s no way I’m gonna make it but I’ll be seeing a lot of lads on the road and I’ll be very jealous as they zooming by me…not too fast I hope.  It’s gonna be a great event the PSNI have got their own tent there as well across from the paddock.  I think it’ll be an amazing event, I think it’ll be really cool to go along.

Ronan Keating says Kylie can 'overcome' cancer

Ananova - May 18th 2005

Ronan Keating says he believes Kylie Minogue can overcome her battle with breast cancer.

Ronan said he was "shocked" to hear that the 36-year-old popstar has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

He told BBC Radio Ulster: "Kylie's such a young woman it's unbelievable. I've met Kylie a couple of times and she's a wonderful woman, she's fiery, she's full of energy. She's got so much energy and

such a great will to live I believe she will overcome it. We're all praying for her.

"If it's caught early it can be cured. People think breast cancer is an older woman's disease, but it's not. Everyone needs to be very aware of this and get regular check-ups. It's very important that younger people understand regular detection is your best chance of survival."

Ronan is currently on a sponsored walk around Ireland to raise funds for cancer awareness.

The walk will raise funds for the Marie Keating Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation set up in memory of his mother who died of the disease seven years ago.

Kylie is due to go into hospital today in Melbourne to start treatment for the disease.

Thanks to Karen!

Ricky Ross ex frontman of Deacon Blue - "I love working with other people," he enthuses.

Online Evening Times

"Next week I'm off to Ireland to write with Ronan Keating. And you know the guy shocks me in his commitment to things. He works so hard but has life well balanced.

"He even stopped a performance in his last tour to show a film for 15 minutes on Make Poverty History. If Radiohead did that, NME would be writing about it. But he's a former boyband singer so he doesn't get credit.
