Ronan’s love of Portugal

The Resident - Weekly Algarve Edition - June 30th 2005

ALGARVE’S KISS FM radio station was at Ronan Keating’s concert held last Thursday at Freeport in Alcochete (Lisbon).

Ronan mentioned to the crowd of around 4,000 fans that he supports the Make Poverty History Campaign and pointed out how important the G8 Summit was to Africa. Ronan will be at the Edinburgh Live8 concert on Wednesday, July 6, to support the campaign (read Focus: Africa Special Report on pages 50 and 51).

In an interview, Ronan mentioned that he really loved Portugal and his home here was only “down the road” at Quinta do Lago, where he lives for about three months of the year. He likes Quinta do Lago as “its peaceful” and “nobody bothers me”.

Ronan played his best known songs, such as When You Say Nothing At All, Life Is A Rollercoaster, The Way You Make Me Feel, If Tomorrow Never Comes, Father And Son and Words, and some new songs from his forthcoming album.

RONAN KEATING SAVES WOMAN FROM CHOKING

Hello! - 21st June 2005

During his years as frontman of the chart-topping band Boyzone, Ronan Keating was adored by millions of young pop fans all over the world. The Irish singer has now become a bona-fide hero, however, after saving the life of a woman who was choking.

The 28-year-old performer was eating at a restaurant in Northern Ireland when one of the other diners suddenly found herself unable to breathe. "As I swallowed some bread I laughed at a joke," explained 38- year-old Sam Wright afterwards. "The next thing I knew I was gasping for air. I felt my lungs emptying. I stood up and tried to gasp for air but I couldn't - I was scared."

Ronan immediately sprang into action, performing the Heimlich manoeuvre to clear the woman's airway. "Everyone was watching me," said Sam. "Then Ronan jumped up, came behind me, put his thumbs under my ribs and pulled back. The bread popped out and I could breathe. Thank God Ronan was there."

The Westlife founder was in Northern Ireland as he continued his epic charity walk. Ronan and his entourage are aiming to trek the entire length of Ireland in order to raise money for cancer charities and thereby save more lives.

IFPI postpones July 12 Platinum Awards

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has postponed the 5th IFPI Platinum Europe Award to avoid a conflict in schedules with Bob Geldof's July 2 Live 8 concerts. The IFPI event was due to take place in Brussels on July 12.

"The concerts have meant that artists have had to re-arrange their schedules at short notice," says the IFPI in a statement. "The Platinum organizing committee therefore took the decision to postpone the awards ceremony to avoid any possible conflicting demands on artists' time."

The IFPI says that the committee, chaired by EMI Continental Europe chairman/CEO Jean-Francois Cecillon, will "meet again in the near future to discuss plans for a re-scheduled event." No other details were given as to the time-frame for the re-scheduling.

The IFPI Platinum Europe Award is a biennial event celebrating artists whose recordings have shifted more than one million units in Europe. The prestigious gala was due to be hosted by Irish pop singer Ronan Keating in the presence of top officials from the European Commission and members of the European Parliament.

Lines open for Tartan Live 8 gig

BBC News

Tickets for the star-studded Live 8 concert in Scotland have been made available by text lottery. There are 42,000 pairs of tickets for the gig in Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium on 6 July - the same day as Live 8's "million rally" in the city.

Travis, Snow Patrol and Dido are among the headline acts who will perform at the event.

Comedians Lenny Henry and Peter Kay will host the concert, which takes place on the same day as the G8 summit.

The gig will be the climax of Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof's Long Walk to Justice march on the Scottish capital for a massive anti-poverty protest.

Participants in the text competition must answer a simple question, which is: Where will the Long Walk to Justice conclude on 6 July? A) Murrayfield, B) Macclesfield, C) Madrid.

Entrants aged 16 and over must send the answer to 84599 before midnight on Saturday, 18 June. Entries are £1.50 plus the usual text message charge.

More than a million people have entered the text competition for the Live 8 event in London's Hyde Park, featuring Madonna, Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney.

Live 8 promoters expect a huge response to the lottery for the Scottish gig, which is being called "Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push".

The figure is a reference to the number of people who die of poverty every day, said anti-poverty campaigner Richard Curtis.

"Some 50,000 people are dying of extreme poverty each day, and the crowd at Murrayfield represents Edinburgh, which represents the world, asking the eight men in one room at Gleneagles to begin, at last, to make poverty history."

Annie Lennox, Texas, Ronan Keating, Sugababes, McFly and African artists from Peter Gabriel's WOMAD will also perform at the event.

All the funds from the text competition will go funding event costs, with any surplus going to an African schools building programme, said organisers.

Star Sunday -June 12th 2005 By Ken Sweeney

Kylie to Follow in Ro’s Footsteps-Babe’s Note to Keating Ronan Keating has revealed he received a note from cancer-stricken Kylie after he finished his 361-mile charity walk across Ireland.

The superstar -recovering from a breast cancer op- wrote to Keating to say she plans to join the battle to raise cancer awareness.

“It came totally out of the blue,” said Ronan. “Kylie must have heard or read about what I was doing and got in touch to give me her support.”

She also thanked him for his efforts to raise awareness of the disease.

Currently recuperating in a Melbourne hospital, the former Neighbours star went on to tell Keating that she is on the road to recovery.

“Kylie told me she was feeling much better after her operation and that when she got back on her feet that she’d be doing the exact same sort of thing I’m doing now,” said Ronan.

To date, Keating’s walk –which began on The Giants Causeway in Co. Antrim on May 16 and ended last Monday in Kinsale- has raised €110,000 for cancer charities. You can still make a donation by texting Walk 05 to 57786.

Ronan said: “For younger women who thought that breast cancer was something that happens to older people, Kylie’s diagnosis was a wake- up call.”

After resting his sore legs, Keating is preparing to get back into the studio and do what he does best –make music.

Star Sunday can exclusively reveal that the former Boyzone singer is in talks with super-producer Trevor Horn to do his new LP.

Horn has worked with some of the biggest acts of the eighties and nineties including Frankie Goes to Hollywood and ABC.

Keating said: “The songs we’ve got to work with are amazing. I did all of them with Gregg Alexander who did Life is a Rollercoaster-we’ve eight more as good as that,” said Ronan.

He also revealed that he is planning to follow his duet with Leann Rimes with another double act-this time with Shania Twain.

He hopes it will help his planned US assault.

“My Greatest Hits album did very well over there and as a result we’ve hooked up with a new company who want to market my next record in the States and have a big budget to do it,” said Ronan.

US album for Ronan

Irish Sunday Mirror - June 5th 2005 By Tina Calder

IRISH popstar Ronan Keating is set to crack America this year - but the former Boyzone star says he will never move to the US for the sake of his career.

The singer, who finishes his length of Ireland walk in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation and Cancer Research tomorrow said: "In my career my big dream at the minute would be to break America. My album comes out in four weeks over there."

Last year Ronan signed a lucrative record deal with Curve Records in the US to release his debut American album.

And so far he's pleased at how it's going.

He said: "Tomorrow Never Comes is on the radio in the US at the minute so there's a big push going on there, but I've been let down before. I had high hopes for my first album and then I got let down badly so I'm not going to build it up this time."

He added: "I could never move there like Robbie Williams. The Irish and UK markets are too important to me. My fans here are just too important to me."

Brasher Rescues Ronan

By Jon - Outdoor Magic (in association with MacPac New Zealand)

In true Hello! magazine stylee we can reveal that Brasher has saved the gorgeous, pouting feet of legendary warbling Irish pop star Ronan Keating from a fate worse than death.

Apparently Ronan - the quavering voice that launched a thousand boy bands - is off on a 22-day fundraising trek around Ireland to raise money for the Marie Keating Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

Heart-throb Keating and crew had managed only 40 miles of their mega- trek starting from the Giant's Cuseway, when Ronan complained that his socks were wet with perspiration. Fortunately Mid Antrim Camping was at hand and following advice from the staff there, Keating resumed his trek kitted out with 12 pairs of Brasher's two-season socks.

We're not going to bring up the old joke about the Irish man who followed advice to put on a clean pair of socks every day only to find that he couldn't get his feet into his boots by the end of the week, because that would be crass.

Nick Alexander from Mid Antrim Camping told Hello!, sorry, OUTDOORSmagic, that "Brasher's 2 season sock was the ideal solution to Ronan's problem. They're ideal for light hiking and walking in the warmer seasons and contain Coolmax to wick moisture away from the foot while the air channels in the socks assist in keeping the foot dry and cool. He seemed very happy with the products we sold him and I can guarantee he won't be suffering any more with sweaty feet as he walks his way around the country!"

Another member of Ronan's entourage - great word, entourage - splashed out on a brand new pair of Brasher boots after his original boots reduced his feet to a mass of blisters...

Well done Ronan and good luck with your walk. Next week, we visit Brian Blessed in his lovely house and talk to his cat about love, personal grooming and tuna.

Midge Ure announces line-up for Edinburgh's Live 8 concert

By Simon Freeman, Times Online

Legendary Scottish pop groups including Annie Lennox, Wet Wet Wet, The Proclaimers, Texas and Travis will perform alongside English acts such as Dido and Snow Patrol at a free concert in Edinburgh to coincide with the G8 summit.

Midge Ure, the former Ultravox frontman, unveiled the line-up for the concert at the Murrayfield rugby stadium on July 6 which will also include performances by The Zutons, Natasha and Daniel Bedingfield, The Thrills, Jamie Cullum and Ronan Keating.

The concert is aimed at sending a message to the G8 meeting of the leaders of the world's richest countries, who will be gathered at Gleneagles for the first day of their three day conference.

The music event will be staged under the banner Live 8 Long Walk To Justice, and will form the climax of a day of public demonstrations in the Scottish capital.

Sir Bob Geldof, the rock star turned anti-poverty activist, has called for a million protesters to march on the city - and has refused to tone down this appeal, even after the city's police and civic leaders warned that the event would cripple the city and could spiral out of control.

Ure, originally from near Glasgow, has said that he and fellow Band Aid veteran Geldof might also take to the stage for the gig at Murrayfield, which can hold 90,000 people.

The 51-year-old, who now lives in Bath, urged as many people as possible to turn up and "be part of a day which might just change the world".

After announcing the list of confirmed acts he told reporters: "It's going to be a fantastic day."

The gig will take place four days after the Live 8 concerts which Ure is organising with Geldof in London and around the world. A text message contest for the 66,500 pairs of tickets yesterday received 600 entries per second, generating £3 million in its first day.

Pop star Ronan Keating is celebrating this morning after completing his second charity walk of Ireland and says he's looking for his next challenge. Here's Louise Port:

631 miles over 22 days from County Antrim Giants Causeway to Kinsale in Cork; Ronan Keating finally crossed the finishing line yesterday afternoon. It's the second time he's walked from the top to the bottom of his homeland.

(Ronan speaking on the phone)

T
he sun was shining today we couldn't have asked for a better finish it was really wonderful the amount of support we got through Kinsale all the way out to the Old Head of Kinsale it was just magical, it we couldn't have dreamed of a better finish.

And despite having walked roughly a marathon a day for 3 weeks he's not hanging up his walking shoes.

Ronan: Ya know two times to walk Ireland maybe the buzz is not there for everybody next time, it wouldn't be there for me, once people see you do it once maybe twice it wouldn't be as hard hitting the next time round so maybe we need to find something new but I'm definitely up for another challenge.

Ronan's raised at least £200,000 for cancer charities in particular the foundation he set up in his mother's memory.

Ronan wraps up marathon cancer awareness walk

Irish Independent - June 7th 2005

FORMER Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating (28) yesterday completed his gruelling 361-mile charity walk across Ireland, having raised over €110,000 for cancer charities.

The singer began the walk at the Giant's Causeway in Co Antrim 22 days ago and crossed 10 counties, often in poor weather, to reach Kinsale, Co Cork, yesterday.

Keating set up the Marie Keating Foundation four years ago in memory of his mother, who died at 51 of breast cancer in 1998. The foundation has three mobile cancer awareness and detection units in Ireland, which can be used for free.

Keating's aim, he said, is to help in some way to demystify the illness. He had believed parents were always meant to be pillars of strength, so it was hard to accept when his mother fell ill. Now he wanted to stress that getting out the message of early detection was also critical. Kylie Minogue's recent breast cancer diagnosis was important in terms of youth awareness, he said, "because everyone sees breast cancer as a disease that impacts on older women". Hundreds of fans turned out to see the singer and his sister Linda - chief executive of the foundation - and other family members complete the walk. Ms Keating said the journey to Cork was tough at times but that the event had helped to raise funds, some of which will be spent on bursaries for nurses to specialise in oncology.

Donations in the North are going to Cancer Research UK.

Last March Ronan Keating launched the Men Keeping Fit campaign, aimed at raising awareness of prostate and testicular cancer. Early symptoms of prostate cancer centre on the urinary system. The first sign of testicular cancer is usually a swelling of one of the testicles, or a pea-sized hard lump on the front or side of a testicle. The foundation's website at www.mariekeating.com gives further details.

Walk Ireland Day 21: Sunday June 5th Cork City plus a message from Ronan

Ronan answered questions put to him by Steve from the fans, and thanks to Steve for posting the answers on his official Walk Ireland 2005 site

So I asked the man your questions and here is what he had to say... Thanks to Lisa for filtering through the millions of questions!

How about a live or acoustic album?

Possibly next year.

What are your future tour plans? Do they include Australia, Scotland, Switzerland and other European destinations?

Well, as you know, I'm in the studio at the moment recording the next album. I hope to have it finished by early 2006, so the next tour plans are for late spring/summer 2006... definitely the whole UK, Europe and hopefully further afield. I'd love to go back to Australia - I loved it out there.

Is there going to be a DVD of this tour, or maybe recorded at one of the summer gigs?

Well, again it’s possible that next year we might be doing something. There will definitely be a cool DVD of the whole Walk Ireland 05 experience, which I'm really excited about.

You have obviously done many live performances, solo and with Boyzone, is there one that really sticks out in your memory and if so why?

My solo gig in Johannesburg on the South African tour, July 2002... just a magic venue, and 12,000 people losing their minds. Also Belfast when I lost my voice at the end of the Destination tour - the fans were just amazing that night and pulled me through the worst night of my career... which became one of the best.

If you could have a 'groundhog' day, which day would you choose and why?

The day Yvonne and I got married in the Caribbean.

I read in an interview that your next single will be "connected" What kind of music is it. Is it a ballad or more up-tempo?

Whoa!! Its not confirmed that it will be the next single! Its a great track though (Steve: I agree - cool tune) and quite up tempo - just gets in your head.

What's the last concert you have visited yourself? And what was your favourite concert ever?

Last one - Bryan Adams, best ever, U2 in Madison Square Garden on the "Beautiful Day" tour.

Can u touch your nose with your tongue?

Yes

If I could stand u a drink sometime - what would it be? A) pint of guinness B) jd & c? C) frangelino?

JD, no contest.

What do you take with you wherever you go and can't live without? (other then the wife and kids)?

my PowerBook and mobile!!

I know you haven’t even finished Walk Ireland 05 yet but what can you see yourself up for in the future?

Ask me on Monday afternoon.

Do you have any particular favourite songs to sing live? Do you prefer singing your more upbeat songs or the ballads?

I love singing the Long Goodbye. I was surprised that it was the fans favourite in the vote but I'm happy about that. I love both the ballads and up tunes.

How many tattoos do you have now (that you want to mention) why did you get them and what do they mean? And did you scream when you got them?

I've got 3 - one's a celtic cross, one is the Japanese symbol for love and the other is a Maori design. No I didn't scream (liar)

Is there anything you can tell us that you think that the fans don't know about you?

Probably, but you guys seem to know an awful lot. Even things I don't know about me (laughs). I've got long toenails.

You often do "covers" on your tours, but they don't often appear on your albums (Train - Drops of Jupiter springs to mind) Is there one cover that you would really like to record or perform that you haven't done yet...?

I'd love to record the New Radical's track "Someday We'll Know". Its just a fantastic track and I always loved the version we did live a few tours ago.

If you had one wish which will be fulfilled immediately, what would it be?

That my kids will grow up strong and have long and healthy lives.

Have you still got the car the Boyzone lads bought you for your 21st / the bike that you and Yvonne arrived on to your party? What about the teddy Andi Peters showed to the world on tv, Treggs?

No, no and no... I'm not much of a horder.

With the next addition to the Keating family on the way and so much success since the 'Life is a Rollercoaster' book do you have any plans to write the next instalment of your autobiography?

Well, I'm hoping to do a photo-driven book quite soon. Just some shots that sum up life as it has been over the past while...

‘those’ moves to Lovin’ Each Day were the planned originally or a spur of the moment action?

What are you talking about? What moves?
