Ronan's angel

Irish Independent - July 25th 2004 (registration required)

Your ALT-Text here ANGEL OF MERCY: Yvonne Keating, staying by Ronan's side during his illness

AFTER two days in hospital I took a turn for the nurse.

Our greatest pop star, Ronan Keating, with his beautiful wife Yvonne by his side, meanwhile, seems to be on the mend. On Sunday, having flown back on Saturday night from his villa in Portugal to attend the annual Marie Keating Golf Outing, Ronan collapsed at his home in Malahide and was rushed to hospital.

The former Boyzone star had an allergic reaction - not to Louis Walsh but to something he ate in sunny La Quinta, perhaps, with Yvonne and the two kids, Jack and Marie. "Ronan is doing well and looking forward to getting home. He is receiving brilliant care and is touched by the number of get-well messages. I know he would like to thank everybody," his friend Glin Donnelly told me.

"It's just one of those things," Ronan said from his hospital bed. "I am disappointed to have had to miss the charity tournament."

"He's absolutely fine. Hopefully he'll be getting out of hospital early next week, after some rest," Yvonne told me. (The stunning ex-model is sleeping in the room with Ronan. I'd be sick too, if only Yvonne would sleep on the bed next to me.) "Ro is looking forward to getting back to work," she said.

Amen to that.

Ronan Keating will be playing at Northampton's Balloon Festival

Your ALT-Text here "Ronan is very much looking forward to appearing at the festival " A spokeswoman for Northampton Borough Council

Ronan Keating will still headline this year's Northampton Balloon Festival, despite growing fears over the Irish heart-throb's health after he collapsed with a mystery allergy.  The former Boyzone star, who is booked in to appear at The Racecourse on Saturday, August 21, was taken to a Dublin hospital at the weekend, sparking fears he may be forced to pull out of the summer gig.  But worried festival organisers yesterday made contact with the pop star's management company and told the Chronicle & Echo the concert was not in doubt and that he would be taking the stage as planned.  A spokeswoman for Northampton Borough Council said: "Event organisers for the Northampton Balloon Festival have spoken to Ronan Keating's management and it has been confirmed that his concert on Saturday, August 21 will take place as planned. "His management added that Ronan is very much looking forward to appearing at the festival and he is sure it will be a memorable event." Reports claimed doctors were forced to put the 27-year-old, who has enjoyed a string of number one hits across Europe including Rollercoaster and When You Say Nothing At All, on an intravenous drip to help swelling around his eyes.  His wife, Yvonne, flew back from Portugal with the couple's two children to be at his bedside during the treatment, which forced him to pull out of a celebrity golf day which was being staged to help raise cash for cancer charities.  The Irish singer has pulled out of all appearances scheduled for the next few days but fans have been promised he will be back to 100 per cent ahead of his arrival in Northampton next month. Tickets for the concert are on sale now and cost £12.50 if purchased in person from the Northampton Visitor Information Centre, Guildhall Road or Spinadisc on Abington Street. They will also be available from Ticketmaster via the web at www.ticketmaster.co.uk or by phoning 0870 534 4444, although a booking fee applies.

Keating in hospital after illness scare

Belfast Telegraph - July 20th 2004

Your ALT-Text here ILLNESS yesterday forced Ronan Keating to pull out of a celebrity golf outing in aid of the charity he set up in his mother's name.

The singer had to be hospitalised yesterday morning after developing an infection following an allergic reaction while on holiday at his villa in Portugal.

He had taken ill earlier on Sunday. On his return to Dublin his condition worsened and he had to be hospitalised to undergo tests.

Keating's publicist Lindsay Holmes yesterday said the singer had not voluntarily pulled out of the golf.

She said Ronan was confident and optimistic he would be better and ready to compete in the Golf Classic in the K Club where he was due to partner Darren Clarke. "However, his condition deteriorated overnight," she explained.

Keating had developed an infection and had been put on a drip. "Hopefully it's nothing too serious," she added.

Thalidomide victims win cash rise

The Herald

BILLY BRIGGS July 16 2004

VICTIMS of the thalidomide drug are to receive up to £3120 more a year after a U-turn by the government over tax rules.Payments to victims of the Thalidomide Trust, set up by Distillers, the makers of the drug, will now be tax free.

Given to pregnant mothers in the late 1950s and early 1960s to treat morning sickness and nausea, thalidomide led to thousands of babies being born with stunted limbs and other birth defects.

The thalidomide scandal led to years of litigation as victims and their families attempted to win compensation. There were boycotts of Guinness, which bought Distillers, the drug's manufacturers, in 1986, and some people even went on hunger strike to highlight the financial plight of victims.

About 480 people in Britain were affected, with around 60 of those from Scotland. Yesterday's announcement means the 456 living survivors will be up to £60 a week better off.  Heather Bird, 42, from Wishaw, who spent 14 days on hunger strike along with two other campaigners in 1994, said she was delighted that the government had changed its position. "The trust fought tooth and nail for this so it's a great victory. Perhaps now I will be able to afford a live-in companion carer. I even had to remortgage my house a few years back to be able to buy a wheelchair."

Dr Martin Johnson, the trust director, said: "This change will make a big difference to many of our beneficiaries, particularly those who struggle to get by on the relatively small sums of money we are able to provide."

Trust payments had been counted as income which meant victims had to pay more tax. The payments will now be reclassified so they become tax exempt, although this will not be backdated.

Another campaigner whose mother took the drug, Guy Tweedy, said: "After meeting 125 MPs, and writing over 3500 letters to Lords, MPs and beneficiaries, we welcome this tax exemption, which is 30 years overdue."

The trust has campaigned for the rule change since it was set up in 1973 by a donation from Distillers. In 2000, campaigners asked the  general public in Scotland to boycott products made by Diageo, the successor company to Distillers, in an attempt to improve the financial position of the drug's victims.

Freddie Astbury, president of pressure group Thalidomide UK, said they were "delighted" with the decision. However, he added: "It's a shame that thalidomide victims have had to pay unnecessary tax for 29 years based at 34%.

"We have been taxed at the same amount as a professional footballer, which is ridiculous when you consider the level of our disabilities. "Many people forget that the drug was given a product licence by the government in 1958 without thalidomide being adequately tested. No government has ever offered compensation to the victims: instead they taxed us on our settlements."

The campaign was supported by a number of high-profile personalities, including Robbie Fowler, the football player, Prince Naseem, the boxer, and the pop star Ronan Keating.

Star-studded birthday bash for Victoria of Sweden

Hello Magazine - July 15th 2004

Your ALT-Text here Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has rung in her 27th birthday with a little help from a soul smoothie. The pretty royal appeared arm in arm with the inimitable Lionel Richie as her birthday celebrations got underway at the royal family's summer residence.

A lavish banquet was held at Solliden Palace, on the island of Öland, to mark the princess' big day. Irish singer Ronan Keating and funk legend Stevie Wonder provided the entertainment, as Victoria's loved ones wished her many happy returns.

The only person missing from the gathering was her boyfriend, Daniel Westling. As was the case last year, the personal trainer and gym owner was not invited to the family meal, but he was made welcome at the concert afterwards.

The musical extravaganza marked the climax of a long day of festivities. Earlier in the afternoon the princess appeared outside the gates of Solliden to meet the thousands of well-wishers who had come to offer their congratulations. The young royal had quite a job to collect the many bunches of flowers and gifts that were presented to her, but fortunately her parents, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, were there to offer a helping hand.

Victoria's birthday is something of a national celebration in Sweden, with the highlights of her party being broadcast on national television. And the affection her people feel for her was much in evidence when the huge crowd outside the palace joined together to sing Happy Birthday.

Singing in the rain

BBC Birmingham

Your ALT-Text here There was plenty of singing in the rain as 30,000 music fans filled Cannon Hill Park for the biggest gig of the summer in Brum.

Rain didn't dampen spirits as thousands of fans poured into Cannon Hill Park for New BRMB's Party in the Park 2004.

Lionel Richie got the biggest holler from the crowd as he belted out All Night Long and Dancing on the Ceiling.

Other favourites were nice guy Mark Owen who sympathised with the soaking wet crowd and drenched himself with a bottle of water; sassy Rachel Stevens who then dashed off to take part in Sports Relief; Ronan Keating, who caused a teenage frenzy by jumping into the crowd; and everyone's favourite jungle boy Peter Andre.

Ronan, Yvonne, Samantha Mumba, Kerry McFadden and Robbie Keane attend the Miss Ireland Finals on July 2nd 2004

Thanks to Karen!

Showbiz Ireland

The Miss Ireland ceremony has been turned into the party event of the year and one not to be missed - this year Bryan and Kerry McFadden joined other VIPs who just love to go crazy at the City West Hotel annual beauty pageant:

If you were lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket to the Miss Ireland finals in City West Hotel over the weekend you may have noticed that the celebrity partying got more attention than the actual ceremony itself!

With a big ShowBiz turnout, plush surroundings, lots of beautiful people, free booze, live music, and the McFaddens in attendance Miss
Ireland 2004 was always going to be a crazy night.

Miss Donegal Natasha Nigairbheith beat favourites Roz Lipsett and Robbie Keane's girlfriend Claudine Palmer to get the coveted Newbridge Silverware Crown, which was last worn by the current Miss World Rosanna Davison, to become Miss Ireland 2004.

The stunning 21 year old Gweedore native was chosen by celeb judges Samantha Mumba and Yvonne Keating to represent Ireland in the Miss World finals next year.

But after the winner was picked the real partying began with Bryan and Kerry McFadden at the fore grabbing their fellow VIP guests Ronan Keating and Samantha Mumba up onto the stage to dance. After a very late and enjoyable night at the City West Hotel we're sure everyone to who attended had a sore head - not least when they looked at the photos in the Sunday papers!

Well, here's looking ahead to next year's Party!

Widow Ernestina Doku farms one hectare of rice paddy outside Accra. It does not yield a profit. 'My husband died because rice could not sustain us. We had no money for medical bills.' She desperately needs government subsidy - subsidy denied by IMF and World Bank conditions attached to loans.

Agatha Yumbia, 30, barely exists as a small-scale poultry farmer. She keeps 12-15 chickens and depends on passing trade for income. EU-subsidised chicken, imported frozen from Holland, is much cheaper in the markets than her locally produced chicken. She needs government help if she is to do more than just survive.

Kwame Boateng is a tomato farmer who cannot make a profit from his land. He has to find money to pay for water, fertiliser, and pesticides - and then, once his crop is harvested, there is no cannery to sell to. He desperately needs help from the government if he is to survive.
