When You Say Nothing At All

Reached number 1 in the singles chart in July 1999

 Went gold

Ronan: I had heard this song a few years before recording it.  It is a beautiful love song that for some reason keeps getting played at weddings and I have ended up singing it at a few.  It was Richard Curtis the writer and director of Four Weddings, who came to me and asked would I record it for his new movie Notting Hill.  I jumped at the opportunity and before I knew it I had recorded the song that would lead to my solo career.

 Went gold

Ronan: I was in LA for a few months recording my first solo album with Pat Leonard; when I got a call from a guy called Gregg Alexander of the New Radicals. He said he had written a song that he thought would be perfect for me.  Little did I know that this would end up being such a big hit for me.  As soon as I had heard the song it was immediate – I loved it.  I recorded it in LA soon after and on we went.

The Way You Make Me Feel

Reached number 6 in the singles  chart in November 2000

Ronan: Nobody turns down a song from Bryan Adams!  It was such an honour for me to sing on this record and to have Bryan on backing vocals.  I remember standing in front of the mirror at home when I was a kid singing into a hairbrush to ‘Summer of 69’.  And here I was now singing with him – what a buzz.  I love this song; it remains one of my favourites to this day.

Reached number 2 in the singles chart in April 2001

Ronan: Once again I was to work with a guy who was to become a good friend, Gregg Alexander.  We hooked up for this one in Camden, London.  It’s a great uplifting song that gets everyone out of their seats.  I feel great when I sing this song and to watch everyone dancing enjoying themselves; it’s a feel good song.

If Tomorrow Never Comes

Reached number 1 in the singles chart in April 2002

Ronan: I think it was the summer of ‘98’ when I saw Garth Brooks live in concert in Croke Park, Dublin.  What a venue, what a gig, what a performer - it was huge.  Half way through the show he walked off his massive stage and walked on to a small satellite stage, in the middle of the crowd and with just a guitar and one voice he sang this song.  I knew from that moment I had to record this song – it just made perfect sense.

I Love It When We Do

Ronan: Another great song from the Gregg Alexander and Rick Nowels camp.  This is a great pop song that has always been a great craic to perform live.  I shot the video in my home town, Dublin.

We've Got Tonight (Featuring Lulu)

Your ALT-Text here Reached number 4 in the singles chart in November 2002

Ronan: I hooked up with a British icon, Lulu, to sing one of my all time favourite love songs.  I remember as a kid listening to this song over and over again in the house.  It was great to perform with Lulu, she has a fantastic voice and we had a laugh travelling around promoting this one.

The Long Goodbye

Ronan: I have been writing songs for as long as I can remember.  Every now and then a song comes out of nowhere and feels right; like this one that I wrote with the brilliant Paul Brady.  When you have sung a few successful covers, not everyone believes you should change that formula; even some of the people that are supposed to be championing your cause!)……… This song proved them wrong.

Lost For Words

Reached number 9 in the singles charts in November 2003

Ronan: People in the music industry never want to admit they got it wrong, but at the time I thought maybe we had with this song.  Listening to it now though, I love the groove and the simple message in the lyric.  We’ve all been there…lost for words!

She Believes (In Me) Your ALT-Text here Your ALT-Text here

Reached number 2 in the singles chart in February 2004

Ronan: Thanks God for Kenny Rogers.  This is a beautiful song that needed a bit of a revival so I changed the words a little and away we went.

Last Thing On my Mind (Featuring Leann Rimes)

Your ALT-Text here Reached number 5 in the singles chart in May 2004

Ronan:I love this song!  From the moment I wrote this it felt right.  This is the song that both my kids, Jack and Marie, have latched on to – they love singing it.  I sent the song over to LeAnn Rimes, she loved it, so we recorded it and it became a single.  LeAnn is a fantastic singer and a wonderful person, we have become good friends and I hope we can work together again in the future.

I hope You Dance

Reached number 2 in the UK singles chart and number 4 in the Irish singles chart

Ronan: This song has been floating around my music collection for years.  I always wanted to record it but I guess the time never felt right, until now.  It is one of the greatest songs of all time; for me the lyric is so true and at a time when life feels too disposable with bloodshed, war and injustice it has a positive look on life and a beautiful melody.

Father and Son (Featuring Yusuf Islam)

Entered the UK singles chart at No. 2 on December 19th 2004

Ronan: For as long as I live this will be my first song, the song that introduced me to music and to understanding how it all works and breathes.  I remember my brother Gary playing this song in the house when I was small and it stuck with me.  Something in the words and the melody seeped through and fuelled the fire that made me want to write and sing.  I guess I owe a lot to Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) for this song and I could not have re-recorded this song without inviting him to sing on it.  It is such an honour for me to work with him – it feels like life has come full circle.

All Over Again (Featuring Kate Rusby)

Reached no.6 in the UK singles chart on June 4th 2006

A publisher friend of mine turned me on to this song and I just fell in love with it straight away. There are some songs that you know are going to be special from the moment you start working on them and this is one of those. I've been a fan of Kate Rusby's voice for a good while and, though I had never met her, I asked her to join me on this track. I wasn't sure if she'd say 'yes' as it is a little bit away from the 'folk' style that she is known for. When she started singing the song for the first time in the studio the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and that feeling remains with me every time we sing this song together.
