Donna's plea to heart-throb Ronan in bid to save charity

Online Evening Times - April 27th 2005

Ronan Keating & Donna
A DISABLED Glasgow woman campaigning to save an under-threat charity has asked pop star Ronan Keating to step in.  Donna Gallagher, 30, who suffers from spina bifida, was touched by Ronan's kindness after a dream meeting with the singer last year.  She is now convinced he will support their fight to retain Creative Community Crafts, a Cathcart-based charity which has transformed Donna's life.  Donna is paralysed from the waist down and struggled with speech and numeracy until she started attending CCC five days a week. Now she is among 130 clients who will suffer if CCC closes in August due to a funding crisis.  Her letter to the former Boyzone singer states: "Dear Ronan Keating, How are you? My name is Donna Gallagher and I met you at your concert on December 10, 2004 at the SECC in Glasgow.  "I hope you remember me. I will never forget what a great experience it was. I am writing to see if you could help in any way as I am part of a group of clients/users of Creative Community Crafts.  "I attend the activities five days a week and I enjoy the support.

"Just recently the charity did not receive its much-needed funding for running costs and is in danger of closing.  "We wish to appeal to stay open as CCC has made a great change in my life and this was the organisation that got in touch with Linda from Symphony of Dreams to make arrangements for me to meet you.  "I hope this does not offend you but it seems a good gesture to ask. Love from Donna."  Creative Community Crafts was set up around five years ago to provide therapy for individuals who had suffered trauma.  Project manager William Gormley added: "Our lottery grant has come to an end, but we are determined to carry on."  Labour MP Mohammad Sarwar is also campaigning to save the charity.

Ronan Keating lends vocal support to PDSA

Ronan Keating
International artiste Ronan Keating has lent his support to PDSA, the UK’s leading veterinary charity, by donating the use of his hit single, ‘You Say Nothing at All’ to PDSA to lay down as the backing soundtrack for the charity’s television advert.

The TV advert forms the framework of a national awareness-raising campaign for PDSA, and the advert, entitled ‘Give something back,’ was piloted in January in the Central ITV region. Following its success, the advert will air again this month with the new soundtrack in the ITV Central, Meridian and West Country regions, plus Channel 4 in those areas.

PDSA Director of Marketing, Jon Bodenham says: “We are extremely grateful to Ronan Keating for donating the use of his hit record. Its memorable music and powerful words so aptly describe the unquestioning relationship of loyalty, trust and love that exists between people and their pets.

“The launch of the advert with the new soundtrack will further raise PDSA’s profile, whilst highlighting the plight of thousands of sick and injured animals up and down the UK which are in urgent need of veterinary assistance.”

Thanks to Stacey!

Ronan talks to Hit Radio 03 ORF Austria - April 17th 2005

I’m writing the new album at the moment, it’s going so well that I could probably have the album out by Christmas.  I’m writing with Gregg Alexander from the New Radicals and we’re having a great time writing this album, it’s full of California up tempo’s, real feel good songs ya know, it’s got that feel about it like Rollercoaster and Lovin’ each day so it’s fun.  I went over to Chicago two weeks ago to write with Richard Marx, which was quite interesting he’s a really cool guy.

(On Yusuf Islam) He’s writing and recording again so yeah that’s an exciting time for music to think that we’re gonna get Yusuf Islam; Cat Stevens back.

We’ve got a baby on the way in September, it’s incredibly exciting just when you think we’re not gonna have anymore children we’ve decided to have another and it’s beautiful and wonderful and we’re very excited.

TACKLING GLOBAL POVERTY - Sky News - April 16th 2005

Stars from the world of music and film have joined thousands of activists in an all-night vigil in support of "trade justice" to eliminate world poverty.

Ronan KeatingSingers Ronan Keating and Beverley Knight joined actors Vanessa Redgrave and Pete Postlethwaite for a series of performances and readings in Westminster Abbey.

Radiohead front man Thom Yorke also gave an impromptu solo acoustic set.

The performances were followed by a series of symbolic demonstrations to highlight the aim of lifting the world's poorest people out of poverty.

The Wake Up to Trade Justice evening was organised by the Trade Justice Movement - a coalition of 65 UK organisations.

It was part of a series of global events held this week.

Organisers said more than 25,000 people attended the all-night vigil and protest.

Keating travelled to Ghana last May with the charity Christian Aid to see the effects of "unjust" trade.

He said: "I wanted to educate myself and bring my message back. What I saw blew my mind.

"I went to a quarry where guys were working for less than one euro a day, it was heartbreaking. They were
Ronan Keating working without a break in the sun.

"I'm hear to be another voice and hopefully people will listen. This is one of the ways I can give something back."

Campaigners want to see an end to trade conditions which, they say, force farmers in developing countries to compete with cheaper foreign imports.

Glen Tarman, Trade Justice Movement co-ordinator, said: "Our movement is gathering force.

"We have set a clear challenge to the politicians of our country. Act Now. No more words. No more unjust trade in our names."

Baby Can I Hold You remix for Germany - Universal Pop

Dear Ronan Keating Fans

Surely you remember how well 'Baby Can I hold you' was received by the German audience on Ronan's last tour. Along with Father and Son, this was one of the best points of every concert. As Ronan also noticed this, we are very happy that he has decided to remix BCIHY especially for the German market. This new version will be sent exclusively this week to the German radio stations only - no other radio station in England or in any other country has it! This is Ronan's very special present to say thanks to his German fans who made his album reach platinum. We'd be very happy if this song became a big radio hit and that we can show Ronan this his trust wasn't in vain - of course you are very welcome to support us by calling their local radio station and request the song.

Thanks to Lizzie!

Rhona's dream comes true - East Anglian Daily Times - April 12th 2005

By Sheena Grant

MOTHER-of-two Rhona Damant has realised a dream she never thought she would live long enough to see come true - the printing of a book based on her diaries about living with cancer.  Rhona's Diary began in the East Anglian Daily Times' weekly health pages in October 2003 and soon attracted a loyal army of readers.

She had been diagnosed with secondary, inoperable cancer of the lungs, liver, brain and spine only months before, having previously been given the all-clear after a mastectomy and treatment for breast cancer.

Letters, cards and gifts poured in from readers who were touched by Rhona's honest, funny and moving diaries detailing her family life hopes, fears, pain, setbacks and triumphs.

Her words struck a chord with the personal experiences of some, but for others they just reached out on a human level to raise awareness about a subject that affects so many, but is so difficult to confront.

Diaries that appeared in the EADT over an 18-month period have now been collected together in a book, along with a photographic record of Rhona's life, which includes many pictures from her family album, a help and advice section and a personal account of her childhood and adult life, putting her illness into context.

The book, called Sit Down and Stop Laughing, is published by the EADT and is raising money for Rhona's favourite charity, Breakthrough breast cancer.

She admitted to feeling a little overwhelmed by the experience and, unusually for her - as she would be the first to say - almost lost for words.

“It is an unbelievable thing. The whole situation with what has happened in the last couple of years is very surreal anyway - getting the diary published, being invited to a reception with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and meeting Ronan Keating,” said Rhona.

“It is hard to put my feelings into words - how did it all happen, where does it all come from?

“I certainly did not think I would be here to see the book published.  I never thought I would have a book published anyway and then when the opportunity came along I did not think I would be around to see it happen. I can't find the words to explain how I feel.”

The book should raise thousands of pounds, boosting the total Rhona has already helped bring in for cancer charities through various fundraising initiatives.

“The money will go to Breakthrough and it should be a sizeable amount to aid research,” she said.

“Surely that has got to help somewhere along the line and that is what drives me. There will be another fundraising goal after this one too. I don't know what it will be yet, but there will be one.”

“Putting them in the book so that they can be read together seems to add something new and different. It actually makes them even more special, if that's possible.”

Rhona has also bravely dipped into her photo albums, so the book contains some never-seen-before pictures taken through her life from her babyhood up to date.

The foreward to the book was written by pop star Ronan Keating, who lost his own mother to breast cancer.

He agreed to write a piece after meeting Rhona and her family at one of his concerts last year and supplied a touching, hand-written message.

Ronan said he is truly amazed and humbled by Rhona.

He said: "To be in her position yet to have come to a stage where she has confronted the disease, almost overcome it, and to be pushed right back again, is hard enough.

"But to still have peace with herself and not feel angry, especially that she will not get to see her kids grow up is almost unbelievable."

Sit Down and Stop Laughing will be available to buy from April 30th at WH Smith, Amazon and all good book stores.

Here's an extact from the journal on Richard Marx' official website:

Hey,

It's after midnight here in Nashville, and I'm still far from sleepy. I spent the last 2 days in a recording studio here recording several songs for several different projects. I worked with a drummer and bass player here named, respectively, Steve Brewster and Mark Hill.  I also flew in my dear pal, Matt Scannell, to record with us. Matt and I came in from Chicago, where we did some writing this past week. Also at my house was Ronan Keating, who's quite the superstar in Europe, and a really talented and cool guy. Ronan and I wrote three songs together, and another with Matt, over a 2 day period, and we hope to record them this summer for Ronan's next CD.

Thanks to Carla!

’Make Poverty History’ and Vote for Trade Justice at the Co-operative Bank

Mysan.de - April 5th 2005

The Co-operative Bank today opens the doors of its branches nationwide for a public vote in support of Trade Justice. As part of the Global Week of Action for Trade Justice, which runs from 10-16 April 2005, the bank is aiming to collect thousands of votes to show Government the strength of public support for this issue.

Pop star Ronan Keating was amongst the first to cast his vote, and he will be joining many other celebrities in support of the Global Week of Action. To mark the week, a series of special events will be taking place in up to 70 countries around the world, with over 10 million people preparing to take part.

Kate Daley, Campaigns Manager at The Co-operative Bank, said: "Poor countries lose about US$2billion a day because of unjust trade rules - that’s 14 times the amount they receive in aid. If you think that this is unfair and would like to help to change it, then just visit your local Co-operative Bank and join thousands of others in the vote for Trade Justice today."

2005 is a crucial year in the fight against global poverty - a year to ’Make Poverty History’. The Government is being urged to support policy change on the three critical issues of debt, aid, and trade justice. This year The Co-operative Bank is campaigning in partnership with Christian Aid for Trade Justice for the world’s poorest countries.

Martin Drewry, Head of Campaigns at Christian Aid, said: "We’re delighted that The Co-operative Bank is supporting the Vote for Trade Justice. We’ve already collected thousands of votes and now voting in bank branches will really boost our campaign. We know there is strong public support for this issue, so our target is to collect 1 million votes to present to Government later this year."

Christian Aid is a founder member of the Trade Justice Movement, a coalition fighting for fundamental change to the unjust rules and institutions governing international trade. Throughout 2005, the Co-operative Bank will be campaigning with Christian Aid as part of its ’Customers Who Care’ scheme whereby the bank campaigns for change on issues relating to its Ethical Policy.

Vote for Trade Justice in person at Co-operative Bank branches from today until 16 April 2005.  Click here to visit the Co-poerative Bank's official website and vote online

A star-studded line-up of live summer music was complete last night with the confirmation of another pop pin-up at Blickling Hall.

After on-off talks, Irish crooner Ronan Keating became the fifth and final act due to perform at the National Trust's lakeside setting in July. The former Boyzone frontman, famous for his slushy love songs, will complete the summer festival on Sunday, July 24. Tickets go on sale today.

The hall's events manager Shirley Donovan said, "There is something for everyone this year,". Ronan was booked to do the Saturday, but he now has a new promoter and we are delighted he is coming to Blickling."

Ronan Keating shot to fame with boy band Boyzone more than 10 years ago. After a string of hits, the 28-year-old went solo with chart-toppers including Life is a Rollercoaster, When You Say Nothing at All, Lovin' Each Day and The Way You Make Me Feel.

Tickets for Ronan Keating cost £37.50 plus booking fee from the Blickling box office on 0870 0104900 or the UEA box office on 01603 508050.
