Ronan talks
to Ireland's 2fm Breakfast Crew Rick and Ruth - Day 9 May 24th
Please do not use this transcript
anywhere else, thank you.
Somebody joining us live on the show
this morning is Ronan Keating, how are you?
Good morning again how are you are you alright?
We're grand how are the feet?
I'm doing ok little bit of shin splints in the leg but nothing too severe
thank God
What do you do for shin splints?
It's just loads of ice and anti-inflammatories and pain killers and
anything else
You make it sound like it's nothing Ronan, shin splints that sounds
nasty
It's not nice yeah it's just when the muscle swells up at the shin and
cuts off the bone down in the front of the leg, it's pretty severe, it's
alright its ok
I love the way you know what it is exactly, you're probably sick of
getting pains in your shins by this stage. For anyone who's
wondering why is Ronan Keating talking about his shins it is part of the
big walk, tell us again about the walk and where the money is going to
Ronan.
In Northern Ireland it's going to Cancer Research UK and in the South it's
going to the Marie Keating Foundation. We're walking from the Giants
Causeway we started last Monday in Antrim down through to the Old Head in
Kinsale County Cork.
And how many miles so far Ronan have you done the counting?
Yeah we've done about 138 I think now so we're a third of the way there
now
I see you're like whippet; have you lost a rack of weight on it?
I'm losing a bit but we're eating an awful lot you kind of have to keep
your energy up
Yeah you do that's great now listen the forecast isn't good today Ronan
so we can send you out a 2fm rain jacket if you like
Thanks very much lovely (laughs)
Have you got your own stash of gear at this stage?
We do, Timberland have been very good to us given us a load of gear.
Sponsors are great when we're doing this, all the hotels have donated, the
gear the BMW's the cars, it would be very difficult to do it without that
sort of help ya know?
You've a big crew around you too coz I've seen you on the news Ronan it
was the day it started last week and I'm a bit of a walker I do the old go
out for a walk in the evenings sometimes, you always see the women out in
the evening walking and they're going at it a rate of knots and their arms
are flying and I thought I bet you Ronan walks at a comfortable pace, I
saw you on the tele Ronan Keating and the pace you were going at you'd put
a sprinter to shame.
Yeah we do 4 mile an hour we do 15 minute miles which is ya know it's a
fairly hefty pace, we keep that going all the time up hills and everything
we can't break it. From the last walk we know that's the speed we're
walking so we've kind of set the schedules at that sort of speed so we're
meeting Lord Mayors if you kind of have to be there at that time so we
rarely break that pace which is fairly good I guess.
Now going at 4 miles an hour apparently at this rate it would take you
just under 6 years to walk around the world
Ah that's not a bad idea
Do you think maybe next year start on that?
You never know that's not a bad one
And we'll see you in 2012
When I hit the Himalayas though I might have a problem
And apparently one of your walks creates enough energy to power a light
bulb for two and a half hours
One of my walks?
Yeah apparently one of your daily walks is enough to power a light bulb
I like that that's good
Someone actually went to the trouble of thinking about that and doing all
the numbers and putting that stuff together
What's the story at the moment where are you today?
We're walking into Kells today, we're just about 3miles outside of Ardee
and we'll be walking into Kells, Kells town today so another 22 today now
please God
You say that just off the top of your head just like that ah another 22
miles today, Ah but that's just nothing.
But really it's exciting we're really moving now, we're feel that we're in
Kells now and it's pretty much close to the centre of Ireland now and
that's a really good buzz to think last Monday we started at the top of
Ireland and we're nearly right bang in the centre now it's very exciting
You're going to Tullamore on Thursday which is undoubtedly equally
exciting
Absolutely we're looking forward to Tullamore we've family near there as
well, it'll be nice to be able to put the feet up and get some home cooked
food and all that it'll be nice
So what's the story again Ronan remind us about making donations
obviously aside from actually coming up to you when you're doing your walk
and saying hey hows it going and they make their donations they can do it
by text can't they?
Yeah 57786 is the text number if you text walk05 to 57786 or you can log
on mariekeating.com and you can get all the info on there too but come out
and support us too please coz when it's raining like this to have a few
people outside on the road it's a great buzz for us.
Would you like, ya know the way people run marathons handing out cups
of water as they go along would you like any of that?
We've had a few cakes now on the way
Have you? So people in Kells today now is your chance to show Ronan
Keating your hospitality and bring out your buns and sandwiches
Bring out your buns (hysterics)…I love it
Ronan do you like butter on your sandwiches are you fussy about mustard
or anything like that?
Ah I'll eat anything
Good stuff alright well listen continued good luck with the walk bring
out those buns as well (more hysterics)
Bring out your buns, bring out your buns!
It's gonna be the catch phrase for the rest of the walk, we'll talk to
you a bit later on during the walk
Brilliant
And we'll catch up with you in a few days
Thanks a million, God bless
See you Ronan
Bye bye
